Mike Danton became a household name a decade ago, though not for his on-ice accomplishments. A St. Louis Blues forward back then, Danton was caught in a botched murder-for-hire plot involving his former agent David Frost and wound up spending more than 5 years in prison before being released in 2009. Yet, he finds himself on this list as a reclamation project on the ice, having spent the last three seasons bouncing around Europe after two years of CIS university hockey in Canada. Danton is a fascinating story all around and his 2013-14 campaign was certainly off the beaten path with stints in Kazakhstan, Poland and Romania after prior stops in Slovakia and Austria. The well-travelled 33-year-old is getting to see the world through sport and good on him — not to mention he's scoring more than a point-per-game wherever he goes.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://larry-fisher.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/alexei-kovalev.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Alexei Kovalev</image:title><image:caption>Christoph Perren<a href="http://www.hockeyfans.ch">/ http://www.hockeyfans.ch</a>
Yes, that's who you think it is — former NHL star Alexei Kovalev. Believe it or not, the 41-year-old spent this past season terrorizing netminders in Switzerland's tier-2 league, racking up 22 goals and 52 points in 44 regular-season games followed by 7 goals and 17 points in 15 playoff games en route to capturing the league title. (Update: Rumour had Kovalev set to play with Visp for a second season to help them defend their championship, but he has since decided to retire after a very impressive career.)</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://larry-fisher.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/chris-mason.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Eishockey RittenSport vs. Sterzing</image:title><image:caption><a href="www.rittensport.it">www.rittensport.it</a>
At the other end of the spectrum, goaltender Chris Mason's ship has likely sailed in terms of resuming his NHL career. Mason, who turned 38 in April, struggled with the Nashville Predators in the lockout-shortened 2013 campaign and was unable to land an NHL job this past season thus landing in Italy of all places. Ironically, Mason took Pogge's old job with Ritten Renon for 2013-14 and posted similar stellar statistics with a .927 save percentage and 2.18 GAA to Pogge's .925 and 2.37 the previous season. But Mason is a decade older than Pogge — almost to the day — so it's less likely that he'll parlay this success into another NHL stint. (Update: Mason helped lead his team to the Italian League Championship posting a sparking .951 save percentage to go with a 1.86 goals against average in 17 playoff games. Mason then signed with the Augsbruger Panther of the DEL - Germany's top league for the 2014-15 season.)</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://larry-fisher.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/cal-oreilly.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Cal O'Reilly</image:title><image:caption>http://gazetteduhockey.com
Cal O'Reilly, the older brother of Colorado Avalanche forward Ryan O'Reilly, is also trying to find his way back to the NHL and appears one step closer than most on this list, having finished the 2013-14 season with the AHL's Utica Comets, the farm team of the Vancouver Canucks. But it was a whirlwind year for the elder O'Reilly, who also toiled briefly for a KHL farm team in Russia's developmental league, the VHL. O'Reilly posted 4 points in 3 VHL games and 1 point in 14 KHL games before returning to North America and recording an impressive 43 points in 51 AHL games. He'll be 28 years old next season, but it's not out of the realm of possibility that O'Reilly could be invited to an NHL training camp this fall.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://larry-fisher.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/stefan-meyer.jpeg</image:loc><image:title>Stefan Meyer</image:title><image:caption><a href="http://www.sheffieldsteelersihc.co.uk/">Sheffield Steelers Official Website</A>
Stefan Meyer also appeared to have decent potential coming out of junior as a former second-round pick of the Florida Panthers, but for whatever reason(s) he failed to stick with Florida or the Calgary Flames, and ended up heading overseas at a fairly young age. Now 28, Meyer has spent the last three seasons in three different European leagues. In 2013-14, Meyer played for the Sheffield Steelers in England, finishing second in team scoring with 28 goals and 54 points in 57 games. Like Pogge, Meyer could still seemingly find his way back across the pond, but he would need to take a step up in competition to get the attention of NHL teams at this point. (Update: As a free agent Meyer has got various offers from EIHL teams and other European teams, but there has been no new of him officially signing anywhere. )</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://larry-fisher.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/justin-pogge.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Justin Pogge</image:title><image:caption>PIC-AGENCY SWEDEN/nwt.se
The Toronto Maple Leafs had high hopes for Justin Pogge back in the day, but the former world-junior standout for Canada never panned out in the NHL, merely getting a shot of expresso rather than a cup of coffee. Seen here allowing a goal this past season in the SWE-1 — Sweden second division — Pogge has enjoyed two solid campaigns since heading overseas. With Bofors IK in 2013-14, Pogge finished with a .920 save percentage and 2.16 goals-against average. He's just turned 28 and has that NHL size at 6-foot-3, so if he can keep climbing the ranks in Europe, there's a slight chance an NHL team could come calling again. (Update: Pogge will play next season in Sweden's top league the SHL with Farjestad, who he's signed with through 2015-16. If he plays out that contract and has two strong season in Sweden's top league and NHL tryout could be very likely, and would likely leave a couple jaws hitting the floor that he worked his way back.)</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://larry-fisher.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/jozef-stumpel.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Jozef Stumpel</image:title><image:caption><a href="http://msport.aktuality.sk">http://msport.aktuality.sk</a>
Jozef Stumpel is pretty much the biggest name going in the Slovak Extraliga, where the 41-year-old's star has never shone brighter. Stumpel is coming off his best season since leaving the NHL in 2008, having put up 16 goals and 67 points in 54 games for his hometown club, HK Nitra, in 2013-14. (Update: Stumpel is still currently a Free Agent, his offensive numbers suggest an NHL return could be possible, time will tell.)</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://larry-fisher.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/marek-malik.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Marek Malik</image:title><image:caption>Erste Bank/EHL/www.eishockey.at
Marek Malik, who scored an unforgettable between-the-legs, game-winning shootout goal with the New York Rangers to highlight his NHL career, has since taken his talents to Austria. In his fifth season overseas, the stay-at-home defender landed with Innsbruck HC in 2013-14 where the soon-to-be 39-year-old finished with 4 goals and 18 points in 47 games. (Update: Malik retired at the end of the season)</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://larry-fisher.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/petr-nedved.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Petr Nedved</image:title><image:caption><a href="www.hcbilitygri.cz">www.hcbilitygri.cz</a>
Another ageless wonder, 42-year-old Petr Nedved resurfaced in North American headlines this winter when it was announced he would be representing the Czech Republic at the Sochi Olympics despite being seven seasons removed from his NHL finale. Turns out, Nedved never retired and has remained an offensive threat over the years — eclipsing a point-per-game pace in each of the last four seasons for Liberec Bili Tygri HC of the Czech Extraliga. That includes 19 goals and 50 points in 49 games during the 2013-14 campaign, to go along with 1 assist in 5 games at the Olympics. (Update: Nedved decided to hang them up after a very productive final season.)</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://larry-fisher.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/michael-nylander.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Michael Nylander</image:title><image:caption>TT Nyhetsbyrån/ <a href="http://www.webbsporten.se">http://www.webbsporten.se</a>
Much like Sami Kapanen in Finland, Michael Nylander is well past his prime in Sweden at 41 years old, but the latter was also still an active player in 2013-14. Nylander's career came full circle this past season, suiting up for 8 games with AIK of the SweHL — formerly the Swedish Elite League. It's the same club that Nylander got his professional start with back in 1991, and this may have been his swan song, considering he only managed 1 assist in this short stint. He also played 25 games in Sweden's second division, recording 3 goals and 9 points. Nylander shares the second-generation potential with Kapanen as well, with his son, William Nylander, being the second-ranked European skater for this year's NHL draft behind the aforementioned Kasperi Kapanen.</image:caption></image:image><lastmod>2014-08-01T09:24:54+00:00</lastmod><changefreq>monthly</changefreq>

<loc>https://larry-fisher.com/cog/</loc><image:image><image:loc>https://larry-fisher.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/center-of-gravity-2014_kelowna-bc_purple-nurple_kelowna-frozen-yogurt.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Center-of-Gravity-2014_Kelowna-BC_Purple-Nurple_Kelowna-Frozen-Yogurt</image:title></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://larry-fisher.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/rachelle-thomas-block-2.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Rachelle Teemu Selanne and the Anaheim Ducks last captured the Stanley Cup in 2007. With this spring's playoffs serving as Selanne's swan song, having announced his intention to retire after the season, it seems fitting for the Finnish Flash to go out on top. That will be the case if guest blogger Jesse Gill's playoff predictions come to fruition.</image:caption></image:image><lastmod>2014-04-16T19:50:36+00:00</lastmod><changefreq>monthly</changefreq>

<loc>https://larry-fisher.com/2014/03/06/trade-deadline-predictions-go-bust-blow-up-in-my-face/</loc><image:image><image:loc>https://larry-fisher.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/ryan-kesler1.png</image:loc><image:title>Ryan Kesler</image:title><image:caption>Getty Images
Vancouver Canucks forward Ryan Kesler emerged worse for wear from this scrap with Andrew Ladd, then of the Chicago Blackhawks, during NHL action back on Jan. 23, 2010. Ladd has since been traded to the Winnipeg Jets, where he is now captain, while Kesler remains with Canucks despite reportedly requesting to be dealt out of Vancouver prior to Wednesday’s NHL trade deadline. I predicted Kesler to end up in Philadelphia as part of the deadline’s biggest blockbuster, but that was far from my only blunder.</image:caption></image:image><lastmod>2014-03-07T18:46:18+00:00</lastmod><changefreq>monthly</changefreq>

<loc>https://larry-fisher.com/2014/03/06/trade-deadline-a-buyers-market-but-no-great-big-spenders/</loc><image:image><image:loc>https://larry-fisher.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/martin-st-louis-2.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Martin St. Louis 2</image:title><image:caption>Bruce Bennett/Getty Images

Vancouver Canucks general manager Mike Gillis will have his hands full leading up to this year's trade deadline. For the first time in a long time, the Canucks aren't occupying a playoff spot at this point in the season and that has the rumour mill churning about who could be on the trade market. Defenceman Alex Edler was thought to be the main target, but now all the focus has shifted to Kesler.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://larry-fisher.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/thomas-vanek.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Thomas Vanek</image:title><image:caption>Mike Stobe/Getty Images
Thomas Vanek's stint with the New York Islanders could be short-lived. If he's not signed to an extension by next Wednesday morning, he'll likely be traded with the Islanders out of the playoff picture.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://larry-fisher.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/martin-st-louis.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Martin St. Louis</image:title><image:caption>Chris O'Meara/Associated Press
Tampa Bay Lightning captain Martin St. Louis and his boss, general manager Steve Yzerman, were all smiles during this pre-game ceremony. However, reports indicate their relationship soured when St. Louis was initially left off Team Canada's roster for the Sochi Olympics, for which Yzerman was also the architect. When Tampa teammate Steven Stamkos was ruled out (broken leg), St. Louis was tabbed to take his place and Canada went on to win gold, but reports persist that St. Louis wants to be traded — preferably to the New York Rangers — and he hasn't exactly denied those claims in declining to elaborate on his conversations with Yzerman regarding his future.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://larry-fisher.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/ryan-callahan.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Ryan Callahan</image:title><image:caption>Kevin Hoffman/USA Today

Crazy rumours always fly around trade-deadline time. The latest? Ryan Kesler has requested a trade from the Vancouver Canucks, according to Louis Jean of TVA Sports. If true, and Jean has always been credible, then the Canucks have a franchise-altering decision to make possibly between now and next Wednesday, March 5. But Kesler is just one of many front-line players potentially available in what could be a busier than usual trading period.</image:caption></image:image><lastmod>2014-02-27T09:12:08+00:00</lastmod><changefreq>monthly</changefreq>

<loc>https://larry-fisher.com/2014/02/23/title-defended-sweden-no-match-for-canada-in-sochi/</loc><image:image><image:loc>https://larry-fisher.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/canada-golden-again.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Canada Golden Again</image:title><image:caption>John Lehmann/The Globe and Mail

Not even this snow shower by Team Canada forward Corey Perry could rattle Latvia goaltender Kristers Gudlevskis during their quarter-final game at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, on Wednesday. Gudlevskis smothered this scoring chance before Perry could poke the puck past him and stopped 55 shots in total, but it wasn't enough for Latvia as Canada prevailed 2-1 on Shea Weber's go-ahead goal in the third period. With the win, defending Olympic champion Canada advanced to the semifinals — as expected — and will next face the archival United States on Friday in a rematch of the 2010 gold-medal game in Vancouver, which Canada won 3-2 in overtime.</image:caption></image:image><lastmod>2014-02-19T20:20:24+00:00</lastmod><changefreq>monthly</changefreq>

<loc>https://larry-fisher.com/2014/02/19/swiss-miss-canada-lands-latvia/</loc><image:image><image:loc>https://larry-fisher.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/oly-latvia-masalskis.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Oly Latvia Masalskis</image:title><image:caption>Julio Cortez/The Associated Press

Crosby recorded a power-play assist — only his second point of the tournament through three games — as Canada prevailed 2-1 in overtime. For Canada to repeat as Olympic champions, Sid the Kid is going to need to step up and make more of an offensive impact in the medal round, starting with Wednesday’s quarter-final against Latvia.</image:caption></image:image><lastmod>2014-02-19T03:57:12+00:00</lastmod><changefreq>monthly</changefreq>

<loc>https://larry-fisher.com/2014/02/17/games-within-the-games/</loc><image:image><image:loc>https://larry-fisher.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/oly-crosby-selanne.jpg</image:loc><image:title>0217-oly-arthur-hockey</image:title><image:caption>Jean Levac/Postmedia News
Team Canada captain Sidney Crosby, left, caught an earful from Finland counterpart Teemu Selanne during their preliminary-round finale at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, on Sunday. The exchange of words occurred shortly after Crosby drew a penalty against Finland during first-period action. Selanne sought out Crosby before the ensuing face-off and gave him a piece of his mind, whispering a few 'sweet nothings' his way, to which Crosby took offence as he made his way to the Canadian bench. Ever wonder what those conversations sound like without the commentator's filter? Guest blogger Dan Nadeau has a pretty good inkling and is willing to share his interpretations, having played junior hockey in Canada and semi-pro in both the United States and Europe.</image:caption></image:image><lastmod>2014-02-17T19:41:20+00:00</lastmod><changefreq>monthly</changefreq>

<loc>https://larry-fisher.com/2014/02/17/canada-edges-finland-2-1-in-overtime-in-140-characters-or-less/</loc><image:image><image:loc>https://larry-fisher.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/oly-doughty.jpg</image:loc><image:title>OLY Doughty</image:title><image:caption>Mark Blinch/REUTERS

Team Canada goaltender Carey Price only allowed one goal in a 3-1 victory over Norway during Thursday's preliminary-round opener in Sochi, Russia. Price was also red-hot for the Montreal Canadiens heading into the NHL's Olympic break, but does that warrant starting ahead of incumbent Roberto Luongo, who helped Canada win gold in 2010? That answer should come sometime Saturday — courtesy head coach Mike Babcock — ahead of Sunday's showdown with Finland for first place in Group B.</image:caption></image:image><lastmod>2014-02-15T13:15:05+00:00</lastmod><changefreq>monthly</changefreq>

<loc>https://larry-fisher.com/2014/02/14/canada-blanks-austria-6-0-in-140-characters-or-less/</loc><image:image><image:loc>https://larry-fisher.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/oly-luongo-celebrates-vs-austria.jpg</image:loc><image:title>0215-oly-arthur-hockey</image:title><image:caption>Jean Levac/Postmedia Olympic Team

Several members of Canada’s gold-medal-winning team share a laugh following the championship game at the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver. Many jokes have been made of this photo in the years since, without ever knowing what this group of Canadians found so funny in the moments after defeating the United States 3-2 in overtime. It seemed a fitting image to illustrate this blog, which brings light to the fact that Canada — even as defending champions — enters the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Russia, ranked fifth in the IIHF World Rankings. Luongo supplanted Brodeur as the starter in that tournament and is returning for the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Russia, while Brodeur was left off this year's roster in favour of Carey Price and Mike Smith.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://larry-fisher.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/2010-crosby-celebration.jpg</image:loc><image:title>2010 Crosby Celebration</image:title><image:caption>Yuri Kadobnov /Getty Images
Canadian forward Sidney Crosby, centre, celebrates with teammates Scott Niedermayer and Drew Doughty after Crosby scored in overtime against the United States to help Canada win gold in the men's hockey final on Feb. 28, 2010, in Vancouver. The 3-2 victory gave Canada its record 14th Olympic gold, with No. 15 on the horizon at this month's Winter Games in Sochi, Russia.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://larry-fisher.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/larry-fisher-tight-crop.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Larry Fisher tight crop</image:title><image:caption>Larry Fisher</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://larry-fisher.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/2010-gold-close-crop.jpg</image:loc><image:title>2010 gold close crop</image:title><image:caption>Ryan Remiorz/The Canadian Press
Get used to this scene, with Team Canada favoured to and, in my opinion, likely to repeat as Olympic champions this month in Sochi. Some of the names and faces have changed, but 11 returnees remain from the 2010 gold-medal winning team in Vancouver. Not back to defend their title, from this photo, are former captain Scott Niedermayer, assistants Jarome Iginla and Chris Pronger, plus Dan Boyle and Joe Thornton. In fact, only Sidney Crosby, Corey Perry and Rick Nash will be in the picture again when it comes time to pose with their hardware.</image:caption></image:image><lastmod>2014-02-10T07:15:03+00:00</lastmod><changefreq>monthly</changefreq>

<loc>https://larry-fisher.com/2014/02/09/why-canada-will-not-win-gold-in-sochi/</loc><image:image><image:loc>https://larry-fisher.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/oly-steven-stamkos-2.jpg</image:loc><image:title>IHOCKEY-WORLD-BLR-CAN</image:title><image:caption>Jonathan Nackstrand/Getty Images
Steven Stamkos, right, seen here representing Canada against Belarus in international competition, won't be making the trip to Sochi. The Tampa Bay Lightning sniper was not cleared by doctors as his attempted recovery from a broken leg fell just short and his spot on Canada's roster was awarded to Tampa Bay teammates Martin St. Louis. Stamkos will certainly be missed as he was expected to complement Sidney Crosby on the team's top scoring line.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://larry-fisher.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/oly-gretzky-jagr-handshake.jpg</image:loc><image:title>OLY Gretzky Jagr handshake</image:title><image:caption>The Associated Press/Kathy Willens
Team Canada's Wayne Gretzky, right, congratulates Jaromir Jagr of the Czech Republic after Canada suffered an upset loss, 2-1 in a shootout, during the semifinals of the 1998 Olympics in Nagano, Japan. Gretzky, the greatest hockey player of all time, was not selected to shoot in the tiebreaker, while Jagr is still going strong some 16 years later as he'll suit up for his fifth Olympics at age 41 this month. Canada ended up finishing fourth in 1998, but has much higher hopes as the defending Olympic champion from the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://larry-fisher.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/oly-2006-jokinen-vs-canada.jpg</image:loc><image:title>OLY 2006 Jokinen vs Canada</image:title><image:caption>Getty Images file photo

New Jersey Devils goaltender Cory Schneider was a somewhat surprising starter on Friday night, given the visiting Edmonton Oilers were playing on consecutive nights and long-time No. 1 netminder Martin Brodeur had already backed up for four straight games. But in this 'what have you done for me lately' world, the Devils stuck with Schneider and he backstopped them to a 2-1 overtime victory, making 19 saves in the process.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://larry-fisher.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/oilers-yakupov1.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Oilers Yakupov</image:title><image:caption>Shaughn Butts/Edmonton Journal
